It’s no secret that Tottenham gaffer Mauricio Pochettino is on the lookout for a pacey forward ahead of the transfer window reopening next month, but with top target Jay Rodriguez expected to remain on the sidelines until February, the Argentine is setting his sights elsewhere.
Rodriguez starred during Pochettino’s sole full term at Southampton, and is just the type of quick, clinical wide-forward Spurs require to compliment flair players such as Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela, although a January deal is looking less and less likely.
The former Saints chief will continue to keep tabs on his old charge, who bagged 17 all-competition goals in 39 games last season, before an anterior cruciate ligament injury scuppered any chance of the 25-year-old forcing himself into Roy Hodgson’s England World Cup squad.
However, according to a raft of reports Spurs have switched their attention to another emerging Three Lions star in their attempts to relieve some of the goal-scoring burden from surprise striking sensation Harry Kane, who has notched 13 times for the Lilywhites this season.
Kane must have thought he’d seen the back of West Brom’s Saido Berahino, for a while at least, when the Burundi-born striker was promoted from the England Under-21 squad into the seniors last month, but the Young Lions pair could be set for a reunion if reports are to be believed.
Spurs are said to have made initial enquiries regarding the availability of Berahino, who has been linked with a £25m move to Liverpool for some months.
The 21-year-old’s goals have dried up since joining Wayne Rooney and co for England’s matches against Scotland and Slovenia, when he failed to make the pitch, but seven strikes in nine Premier League appearances prior to November gives an indication as to Berahino’s potential.
