Tottenham have turned their attention to under fire Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti in the wake of the club’s 4-0 demolition at the hands of Liverpool.

What started as a season with huge expectations has now fizzled out with a whimper as first Andre Villas Boas and now Tim Sherwood have moved Spurs to 40/1 outsiders to reach the Premier League top four.

A home game against relegation-threatened Sunderland – for which the Lilywhites are priced as 4/9 favourites – should earn Sherwood a stay of execution until the end of the season of at least, but lose to Gus Poyet’s men and the former Blackburn captain can kiss goodbye to a second season in the White Hart Lane dugout.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had previously contemplated Frank de Boer and Louis van Gaal as potential Spurs bosses but with neither Dutchman remaining discreet about his endeavours, attention has now turned to Ancelotti.

Real Madrid are still in the hunt for both the La Liga and Champions League trophies but recent results mean the axe – which is never far from the neck of a Los Blancos manager – could fall at the end of the season.

Madrid’s desperation for a 10th European crown means that Ancelotti could be relieved of his duties should he fail to deliver and the Italian’s Premier League credentials make him the ideal man to replace the beleaguered Sherwood.

A double winner in his first season at Chelsea, Ancelotti was harshly and hastily sacked by the trigger-happy Roman Abramovich for failing to deliver another trophy the following year.

The 54-year-old has also tasted success in Italy and France and Spurs should go all out to get their man if they are to go from being a club that flirts with the Champions League to one that regularly features in the competition.
