It was clear where Andros Townsend’s head was at after he walked off the pitch at the Juventus Stadium following England’s one-all draw with Italy over the international break.

Soon after he had thumped home a right-footed equaliser for Roy Hodgson’s side, had exchanged an overly star-struck hug and shirt swap with Gigi Buffon and completed his post-match interviews, the nimble winger got his phone out.

Clearly miffed at talk that he doesn’t deserve to be a regular national squad member given his inconsistencies at club level, Townsend’s aimed this tweet at one man, but it was delivered to his critics countrywide.

The trouble is, it is unlikely that anyone will see football anywhere near as magical from the Spurs man until the next time he graces the pitch for his country.

Townsend has three goals for England in his seven appearances, averaging a strike every 113 minutes. In his entire Premier League career for Spurs he has also managed just three goals, but has racked up a mammoth 41 games getting to that figure.

It’s not like the 23-year-old changes his playing style for Roy Hodgson’s side either. Opta Joe noted a certain theme to Townsend’s international goals:

Any casual Tottenham observer will note that the winger doesn’t hold back from trying to score long range shots for his club either, it just seems to go wrong, a lot, when he’s wearing a Cockerel on his chest.

Until Townsend can rectify that problem and start becoming the trusty spark-plug he is for England in a Spurs shirt – perhaps starting by getting on the scoresheet at anytime against Burnley at odds of 14/5 – he will have to send plenty more self-defence tweets in his career.
