There’s little doubting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s potential, but the Arsenal winger has struggled to produce the goods this term and it’s no guarantee the 22-year-old will make Roy Hodgson’s England squad this summer.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has made 20 Premier League appearances for Arsene Wenger’s team this season without a goal, with his only strike of the campaign coming in the Community Shield.
It’s a poor return from such an offensive player, and it’s left him on the fringes of the first-team at the Emirates.
Having spent his youth career and the start of his pro career with Southampton, it could be a return to the south coast which fires the pacey winger into life, and Ladbrokes are 5/1 the Englishman makes the switch before midnight.
Reports suggest Ronald Koeman has offered Arsenal a loan deal for the Ox, who left the Saints in 2011 for a £12m switch to north London.
With a host of players returning from injury for the Gunners, Oxlade-Chamberlain could find his opportunities limited just when he needs to be impressing.
The Portsmouth-born player has a fine England record, with five goals in 24 appearances, and his performances for the Three Lions only adds more perplexities to his indifferent Arsenal form.
It’s very likely Oxlade-Chamberlain would enjoy much more first-team football at Southampton, but missing out on a title run-in, an FA Cup and a two-legged tie with Barcelona won’t be easy to accept.
But it’s clear Southampton offer his best chance of making the European Championships this summer with England, so it’s very much decision time for the youngster.
Chelsea are also in the hunt in their bid for some additional attacking outlets, and it’s 10/1 Oxlade-Chamberlain makes the switch from north to west London on deadline day.
