Punters could’ve got 4/7 on Wesley Sneijder joining Manchester United on Monday but that has disappeared following the news David Gill has not flown to America with the squad in order to concentrate on finalising a deal.

While Manchester United are yet to formally make an offer, the two clubs opened talks last night and it is believed a fee somewhere in the region of £30-£35m will be enough to land the midfielder.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed yesterday that he searching for a replacement for Paul Scholes, and after ruling himself out of a move for Samir Nasri yesterday, it seems Ferguson is intent on landing Sneijder.

Sneijder’s extortionate wage demands remain a stumbling block but the player himself confirmed yesterday that Inter Milan were prepared to sell him and while he is content to stay at Inter, a move to Manchester intrigues him.

However a statement from Inter Milan’s technical director Marco Branca on the club’s website today suggests the player is not for sale as Milan look to get the best possible price for Sneijder.

“No, there has not been an official offer and there has never been the intention to listen to them,” said Branca. “Hence, the player is getting on with his work and so are we.

“There are no updates. It’s not surprising that Sneijder is a player that is liked by many teams, including the strongest in the world like our team is.”

“He is not for sale.”

But there is another twist to the saga with the eagle eyed editors at the Loughborough Echo caught Frederico Macheda saying things he shouldn’t be saying on Twitter.

Macheda said that he hopes to see Sneijder on Manchester United’s tour of America very soon before his tweet was hastily deleted.

Ferguson’s side are on a three-week tour of the States leaving plenty of time for a Sneijder deal to be completed.
