The name Schemichel is synonymous with goalkeeping at Manchester United but while former number one Peter is an Old Trafford legend it is his son Kasper currently being linked with the Red Devils.

David Moyes has been scouring the continent in search of an experienced ‘keeper to provide stiff competition for current number one David de Gea.

The Spain international has put in a number of solid displays following a shaky start to his Old Trafford career and while his place in the starting XI is now assured, Moyes is keen to bring in a fresh face.

The search has intensified with current number two Anders Lindegaard growing increasingly frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities and Schmeichel junior has now emerged as a shock target.

The 27-year-old has been in fine form for promotion-chasing Championship side Leicester this term and has been the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Serie A giants AC Milan.

However, his father’s ties to United and the champions’ potential willingness to loan him straight back to the Foxes could see a deal struck in the coming days.

United, who are priced at 11/5 to secure a top four finish this season, are aware that Schmeichel’s current contract at the King Power Stadium is set to expire in the summer but with Milan manager Clarence Seedorf monitoring the situation closely Moyes could make his move before the January transfer window closes.

Whether Schemichel arrives at Old Trafford or not Lindegaard’s days as a United player look numbered with the champions also keen on Espanyol stopper Kiko Casilla.

The former Real Madrid man has been outstanding for the Catalan club in La Liga this term and could be tempted by the prospect of teaming up with compatriot De Gea in the north-west.
