After a nine-match goalless streak, Wayne Rooney has now scored four in his last five Manchester United appearances and he is the subject of this weekend’s odds boost for the Red Devils’ Super Sunday clash with Tottenham.
From 8am on the day of the Old Trafford showdown, Rooney will be available at 11/2 to open the scoring against Spurs, which is an upgrade on the 9/2 currently available.
Rooney’s record against Tottenham is solid with nine goals in his last 13 appearances against them and his prospects are obviously enhanced by a return to leading the line of late.
With Robin van Persie injured and Radamel Falcao struggling for form, there is little doubt that Rooney will play the role of chief striker against Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
The England captain has been restored to line-leader for Man Utd’s last three Premier League outings and in this period only Burnley’s Ashley Barnes has fired in more shots on target than Rooney.
Furthermore, only Diafra Sakho and Christian Benteke have touched the ball more in opposing penalty boxes, while just the trio of Harry Kane, Olivier Giroud and Glenn Murray have been able to celebrate more goals.
Tottenham’s defensive record is another reason that Rooney is fancied to score at the Theatre of Dreams.
Pochettino has watched his team let in 18 goals in their last 11 matches in all competitions, which includes two or more being conceded on seven occasions and just a sole clean sheet.
Throw in that Spurs have only managed to shut out West Brom on the road since September and an away clean sheet looks among the worst bets to be considering at Old Trafford.
For those preferring to play it safer from a betting perspective, Rooney is 6/5 to score at any time in the 90 minutes, while it is 11/5 on the double that he is on target in a Utd victory.
