More Ladbrokes customers were left ruing Wayne Rooney’s late penalty miss than those rubbing their hands with glee at the sight of a goal for Diego Costa.

That is according to the latest Ladbrokes betting data, which showed more punters picked the Manchester United man to find the net than those backing the Blues forward.

Yet it was the Chelsea man who delivered the goods, with Costa one of just two of the top five goalscorer bet selections to deliver the goods over the weekend.

Lionel Messi was the biggest disappointment with the Argentine failing to score against arch-rivals Barcelona, despite being the most popular pick to find the net with Ladbrokes customers.

His Ballon D’Or rival Ronaldo was second and duly delivered with Real’s first-half equaliser.

Manchester Citys’ Sergio Aguero was the third most popular choice as punters banked on the Sky Blues battering West Brom.

But while the Baggies were put to the sword in a dominant 3-0 victory, the South American striker was not among the goals.

It was a similar story for Rooney, who contrived to miss a golden opportunity for United late in the game that may well have had punters livid at the England captain.

Costa was the one Premier League favourite who did live up to the billing, despite being behind Aguero and Rooney as the top-flight’s most backed goalscorer.

The Red Devils hero on the day, Juan Mata, was an unlikely pick to score first meanwhile, with just 1.83 per cent of first goalscorer bets in Liverpool v Manchester United coming in for the Spaniard.

It was a similar story in El Clasico, with just 0.09 per cent of first goalscorer selections backing Jeremy Mathieu.
