As an up-and-coming young player at a prominent Premier League club, Raheem Sterling is likely to have advice arriving from all areas as he progresses through his career. Not all of it will be good, but the latest suggestion is.

Although he may not be in the game any longer, as he rests his aching knee, Harry Redknapp still harbours opinions on the game that people want to hear.

His latest appearance, on Alan Brazil’s TalkSport breakfast show, came with some strong words for the Liverpool winger.

Asked what advice he’d give Sterling, who is proving to be a slippery customer to nail down to a new contract, Redknapp said: “Sign your contract. You are at a great club, you are playing regularly, you have become an England international, you’re learning the game.”

“Have another two or three years of playing as you are now,” he continued, “keep taking your game on and you will get the rewards. The money is there anyway, but you will be up there with the top earners in the world in another two or three years if you keep progressing.”
With clubs like Bayern Munich and Manchester City looking at cashing in on the contract standoff between the Reds and Sterling, the England man is likely to be greatly tempted by the chance to challenge for titles more readily.

But as Redknapp has intimated and Gareth Bale has experienced at Real Madrid, jumping ship off the back of one good season doesn’t always have a happy outcome.

Should Sterling switch to either the Bundesliga or Premier League giants he can in no way be guaranteed to be the star attraction, whereas at Anfield he is one of the go-to attacking threats.

Honing his skills in that environment is a far better option for the 20-year-old forward at this stage of his career.
