Manchester United have been handed a huge boost ahead of the summer transfer window with Real Madrid reportedly willing to offload one of their superstars.

The La Liga giants have been surprised by Cristiano Ronaldo’s consistency in recent seasons and as such have torn up plans to replace the Portuguese ace with James Rodriguez.

The Colombian was brought in after the 2014 World Cup as a long-term replacement for CR7 but with the older man dominating Galacticos games ever since the 24-year-old has struggled to assert himself at the Bernabeu.

According to reports, Madrid are now willing to cut their losses and will allow the former Monaco man to leave this summer for £60m with the Red Devils said to be at the front of the queue.

United will not have a straight run at the attacking midfielder’s signature, however, with Chelsea also credited with an interest.

As ever, Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be in the mix but with the Ligue 1 side making Barcelona star Neymar their number one priority it could prove a straight race between the two Premier League sides.

Rodriguez is not the only player United will go to war with Chelsea over this summer, however, with both sides also considering bids for Everton’s Romelu Lukaku.

The prolific Belgian has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, while newly-unveiled Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has reportedly told his new club to re-sign the striker at all costs and to get the deal wrapped up before the start of Euro 2016.

United are the marginal favourites of the two at 6/1 to land Lukaku but with Chelsea not far behind at 8/1 both are in with a shout.

The rivalry between the two clubs has been curtailed somewhat this year by United’s underachieving and Chelsea’s woeful start to the campaign.

With similar transfer targets the two look set to look horns in the coming months, however, and with improved squads their domestic duel could well be revived next season.
