With the ball believed to be well and truly rolling in terms of Jose Mourinho making a sensational return to Chelsea this summer, the Blues may also bolster their playing squad with an addition from Real Madrid.
Mourinho has outlined a desire to return to Stamford Bridge, with the presence of Roman Abramovich’s hierarchy not enough to deter him from heading back to the club he won two Premier League titles with.
And with Real already making a move to secure his replacement, PSG and ex-Blues chief Carlo Ancelotti, it appears certain that Mourinho will head back to London, once final compensation details have been agreed.
The two-time Champions League-winning manager may not be the only man to swap the Santiago Bernabeu for Stamford Bridge however, with Xabi Alonso a potential summer arrival too.
Whilst Mourinho’s relationship with several Los Blancos players has turned sour, he has maintained a close bond with the former Liverpool man, and would welcome the chance to offer him a return to England.
Alonso meanwhile, is thought to be keen to stay under the supervision of Mourinho, having stalled on a decision over the fresh two-year deal he has been offered to remain in Spain.
It is thought that the 31-year-old is waiting to learn the future of his boss before putting pen to paper, and would jump at the chance to link up with Mourinho again, if his move does materialise as expected.
As only a year remains on the Spanish international’s current Real contract too, he could be available on the cheap, with club president Florentino Perez reluctant to allow his deal to wind down to the point he could move on for nothing.
Around £8m should be enough to conclude Alonso’s transfer, and it is feasible he will line up alongside Frank Lampard, expected to sign a new one-year deal with the Blues, in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield next term.
