Manchester United are reportedly in talks to lure a superstar to Old Trafford from Real Madrid but neither Gareth Bale nor Cristiano Ronaldo are the object of the club’s interest.
Instead it has been reported that the Red Devils have entered talks with the Bernabeu outfit over the sale of Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez.
The 24-year-old was a shining light at last year’s World Cup but is said to be unhappy in Spain, where despite some dazzling performances he is yet to emerge from the shadows of his two high-profile colleagues.
Spanish news outlet Fichajes claims the player is determined to quit Madrid and places United as the front of the queue.
With big spending United set to spend a further £200m in order to bridge the gap to the Premier League’s top clubs the rumoured £58.9m fee Madrid would demand for Rodriguez is unlikely to deter the Old Trafford money men.
Rodriguez first caught the eye as a youngster at Porto, where he scored an impressive 25 goals in 63 league appearances, convincing Monaco to sign him for €45m.
A strong season in France, with nine goals from 34 games, and his World Cup performances saw Madrid come calling for a cool €80m.
With 16 strikes from his 38 La Liga games for the club so far the Colombian has delivered the sort of stats expected of him and should he carry that form into United’s starting line-up some much-needed excitement could be on the cards at Old Trafford.
United put in as much-improved display in their recent 0-0 draw with Chelsea but the lack of goals is still a huge concern so while a summer bid for James is more likely, don’t be surprised to see Louis van Gaal – or whoever is in charge – test the water in the New Year.
