For most normal football clubs, having a player as talented as 26-year-old Angel Di Maria on your books would be something to savour, but then again, it’s Real Madrid we’re talking about here.
Ahead of the World Cup, where his native Argentina are among the most fancied potential winners of the tournament at 4/1, Di Maria has revealed his future at the recently-crowned champions of Europe is up in the air.
Despite Di Maria playing a starring role in much of Real’s two trophy successes this season, having to compete with the likes of the world’s best player Cristiano Ronaldo and the planet’s most expensive, Gareth Bale, has led him to believe he may now be surplus to requirements.
Although Di Maria has stated his preference would be to remain at the Bernabeu, a lack of public reassurance from the club’s hierarchy has understandably alerted top Premier League clubs.
Among those are Manchester United, who are virtually being linked with every possible quality player that may become available.
However, with the likes of Juan Mata, Shinji Kagawa, Danny Welbeck and even Wayne Rooney all vying for attacking berths, Madrid’s left-footer would not be a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford.
Then there is the absence of Champions League football to consider. That would certainly be no issue at Premier League champions Manchester City, but squeezing into the Sky Blues line-up would be.
Even though Di Maria can operate in either a wide forward position or as an attacking central midfielder, dislodging David Silva, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure or Jesus Navas is a tall order.
However, at Arsenal, they have been screaming out for a pacey option to play on the left side of their attack where Lukas Podolski doesn’t offer any.
The Argentine could also rekindle his Madrid chemistry with playmaker Mesut Ozil at the Emirates, where he’d be valued as a true star once again.
