Queens Park Rangers fans will no doubt be excited by the latest names that appear a whisker away from completing their Loftus Road moves, but that thrill ought to be tempered by the fear of repeating past mistakes.

Napoli striker Eduardo Vargas and Norwich midfielder Leroy Fer are reported to be mere medicals away from joining on a season-long loan and a £7m permanent switch respectively.

There’s little question that the quality of these players – who both represented their countries at the World Cup – will add something to Harry Redknapp’s current ensemble.

And despite being on the wrong end of a niggly 1-0 loss at home to Hull in their first fixture back in the big time, there’ll be plenty of optimism surrounding the season in light of these buys.

Fer actually scored against Vargas’ impressive Chile side in Brazil, for Holland, and should add some attacking threat to the R’s midfield.

Meanwhile, Vargas also stood out for Chile during the summer’s footballing festivities, where he scored once against Spain and started all four of his countries assignments before exiting at the hands of hosts Brazil.

Even so, a very modest return of five goals for Rafa Benitez’s Serie A side last season, means the Chilean still has much to prove on English shores.

Redknapp now has to juggle four first-choice strikers with Loic Remy supposedly staying for another season while Fer becomes the tenth midfielder on the books if all fit, vying for four spots if they continue to play 4-4-2.

Strength in depth is clearly a valuable asset; though owner Tony Fernandes knows only too well that having an oversubscribed squad can lead to the kind of troubles which saw them face the drop at the end of 2012/13.

No one is accusing the latest duo of becoming overpaid mercenaries just yet, but Redknapp has a job on his hands to keep them all happy.

The R’s face a real examination at White Hart Lane next up where they are long 13/2 outsiders for the three points.
