Pursuit of Chelsea exile unnecessary for balanced Tottenham

There have been many impressive elements to Tottenham’s title challenge under Mauricio Pochettino this season.

If it’s not Harry Kane’s sustained scoring, then Dele Alli’s steep rise or a defensive transformation can give the north Londoners confidence of future success, regardless of the outcome of their Leicester pursuit.

However, one aspect of the Lilywhites’ growth that has only just started getting attention is the depth in their squad.

Early on, Spurs’ thin playing numbers were seen as their most likely downfall. Having Kane as the club’s only striker was a mistake, yet the Englishman has turned in an ironman performance to start every top-flight assignment this season.

Then players like Kevin Wimmer moved seamlessly into the spotlight having waited in the wings until required.

All of a sudden, pundits such as Paul Merson are offering Tottenham as genuine title contenders both now and in the future on the back of their impressive roster.

Merson believes only a few upgrades to the fringe are required at White Hart Lane, while the first XIs at Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City all need rebuilds.

For once, the Sky Sports man is right. Pochettino has his nucleus of 13 or 14 players that forms the bedrock of his side. He merely needs to add a couple of sundries to compliment them and even then they might come from the youth team.

On that basis it will be a real shock if the Argentine signs off on a big name player this summer, even with a return to the Champions League on the horizon.

That’s why little credence should be paid to the latest rumours linking Andre Schurrle to the club.

Not only are Spurs well stocked out wide – with Son Heung-min and Nacer Chadli more than adequate understudies – but the German hasn’t quite fired since returning to his homeland from Chelsea.

The winger has netted seven times in 40 league appearances since joining Wolfsburg, adding eight assists.

All Odds and Markets are correct as of the date of publishing.
