Dimitar Berbatov’s time at Manchester United is set to be over, with Paris Saint-Germain looking set to table an £18m offer for last season’s Premier League joint top scorer.
Despite scoring 20 goals to help fire Manchester United to the Premier League title, it appears that Berbatov is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
The Bulgarian was not even named on the substitute’s bench for the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona and based on pre-season, he may have fallen behind Michael Owen in Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans.
Berbatov only has a year remaining on his current Manchester United deal, but is not expected to be offered a new deal, despite Antonio Valencia and Park Ji Sung recently penning extensions.
This development has alerted Paris Saint-Germain, who see Berbatov as the striker with the necessary qualities to fire them to the French title this season.
The arrival of new rich investors has already resulted in PSG signing the likes of Jeremy Menez, Kevin Gamiero and Blaise Matuidi this summer, while they have also emerged as the front-runners in the chase for Argentine playmaker Javier Pastore.
With Javier Hernandez preparing for his first full Premier League season and Wayne Rooney rediscovering his best form towards the end of the last campaign, Berbatov may be short on first-team opportunities.
This may still be the case even though Manchester United will be challenging for trophies in four competitions, as summer signing Ashley Young can play in a more advanced role and England under-21 striker Danny Welbeck has returned from a successful loan spell at Sunderland.
Therefore, the loss of Berbatov is unlikely to impact Manchester United’s odds to win the Premier League title and they are still 13/8 favourites.
