What World Cup? There’s no looking backwards in football betting, especially with a fresh Premier League season coming into view, as we begin to look at the opening weekend of action.

We’ve done a little bit of maths (only a little mind) and worked out that you can get just over 4/1 on all of the fancied title contestants Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool to get off to a winning start.

Chelsea to win at Burnley @ 4/11

Chelsea did the double over the Clarets during their only season in the Premier League to date in 2009/10. Chelsea have won their last 12 opening league fixtures straight.

Arsenal to beat Crystal Palace @ 2/7

The Gunners may have been caught cold by Aston Villa on the opening weekend of last season, but the Emirates will be bristling after the capture of Alexis Sanchez and quite possibly Sami Khedira by the time this one kicks off. Arsenal beat Palace 2-0 home and away last season.

Manchester United to beat Swansea @ 4/11

Ironically, Louis van Gaal begins his United league career against the same opponents David Moyes did. If Moyes’ appointment could inspire a 4-1 away win that day, then Holland’s outgoing coach ought to rally them to a win over Swansea at Old Trafford.

Manchester City to win at Newcastle @ 3/5

The champions probably wish they could play Newcastle every week next season. They began their path to glory with a 4-0 thrashing of the Magpies on day one last season, albeit at the Etihad, before recording a pair of 2-0 victories in league and cup at St James’ Park. That made it 10 straight victories over Newcastle.

Liverpool to beat Southampton @ 2/5

By the time this game kicks off, Liverpool may have well have swiped their visitors’ match-winner from last year at Anfield, Dejan Lovren, to go with two of their other best performers of 2013/14 Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert. The Reds only dropped seven points at home last season.
