Manchester United may not have the funds to rival Manchester City or Chelsea any more but they look set to have just as busy a summer.
They’ve already snapped up Borussia Dortmund creative midfielder Shinji Kagawa and Poland boss Franciszek Smuda is convinced that his striker Robert Lewandowski – who scored in their opening draw with Greece yesterday – is on his way to Old Trafford.
However, their summer spending doesn’t look like stopping there with the Sun yesterday reporting that they’ve made a bid of around £25million to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric and several new players being linked with them this morning.
According to the Daily Mirror, Sir Alex Ferguson is considering making a £14million bid for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Kevin Strootman.
The player has been likened to Roy Keane in his style of play and, with Darren Fletcher a long term injury doubt, Ferguson is keen to add to his midfield ranks – an area in which United seemed to be lacking last season as they missed out on the title through goal difference.
Meanwhile, United also look to have finally agreed a £4million deal for Crewe attacking midfielder Nick Powell according to the Daily Mail.
The 18-year-old has been tracked by United for some time and the deal was rumoured to have been completed weeks ago. However, this time it looks like things have finally been sorted, with Crewe getting £2million up front and a further £2mllion down the line.
This is a long-term investment for United though and the paper is reporting that he looks likely to go back to Crewe on loan next season as he hopes to secure regular first team football.
