In the Premier League seasons change with a blink of an eye. Hot on the heels of the iconic festive one that’s now upon us, the well-renowned transfer silly-season is to be ushered in with a plethora of head-scratching rumours weighing down the few credible ones.
Although we are still a few weeks away from the grand opening of the January transfer window, nonsense transfer links are still finding their way into the various columns that dedicate inches to such gossip.
In fact, two have appeared in one day at the start of this week, with a pair Liverpool flops supposedly set for Premier League switches when the New Year sales start.
The first surrounds the mercurial Fernando Torres and a return to Anfield, despite the Spaniard failing to reach double figures in his league-scoring tally in any of the last three seasons.
Having finally outstayed his welcome at Chelsea, the 2008 Ballon d’Or bronze medallist is on a two-year loan to AC Milan, but is struggling to ingratiate himself with the Rossoneri faithful having scored just one Serie A goal in 10 appearances for the club.
Unbelievably, and as a measure of just how ridiculous rumours can be at this time of year, the Reds face competition for El Nino’s signature, with another of the 30-year-old’s former employers, Atletico Madrid, keen to rescue the lost striker.
Elsewhere, Aly Cissokho, who has spent a largely anonymous season and a half on these shores playing for the Reds and Aston Villa, is wanted by mediocre-full-back addicts Tottenham when the ribbon is cut on the winter window.
Like Torres, there is a scrap for Cissokho’s services with Napoli also keen on the left-back, who only signed a four-year deal with the Villans this past summer.
Cissokho has started every Premier League game for Paul Lambert this season, but couldn’t be considered an upgrade on either Danny Rose or Ben Davies at White Hart Lane.
