It may not have been the biggest week of transfer deals in the Premier League, but even if it had, any signing would have been hard pushed to beat Chelsea welcoming last season’s title-winning hero N’Golo Kante to Stamford Bridge.
The Leicester midfielder stole headlines weekend after weekend last term, with a series of wonderful performances.
But following huge speculation over the Frenchman’s future, it was Chelsea who eventually sealed the deal for a reported £30m, and the move is unquestionably our Premier League Signing of the Week.
It’s a blow to the Foxes, but after signing him for around £5.6m from Caen just 12 months ago, and becoming a huge part in helping them win the league, it’s got to be considered as seriously good business.
For Chelsea, the west London club can now head into the new campaign under Antonio Conte, boasting one of Europe’s finest workhorse midfielders.
It’s a position that the Blues haven’t seen such quality in since Claude Makelele and Michael Essien were at their peak, and Kante’s arrival will add a steel to the side which was sorely lacking last term.
Kante had also been courted by Arsenal and Manchester United, but both must now look elsewhere for a midfield dynamo.
It wasn’t all about Chelsea and Kante though.
Major consideration for this week’s award was given to Middlesbrough’s potentially superb signing of Alvaro Negredo from Valencia on a season-long loan.
The former Sevilla and Man City striker has a proven track record, and if on form, could lead Boro well into the echelons of mid-table.
But with Kante in their squad, Chelsea’s hopes of reclaiming the Premier League title have been handed a significant boost.
