Southampton currently sit above champions Manchester United in the Premier League and while Saints fans will be more than happy with how their season is shaping up there is cause for concern as far as current form goes.

The south coast outfit have gone four games without a win in all competitions and have won just once in seven attempts.

This is hardly great preparation for a trip St James’ Park and three consecutive losses on the road mean Mauricio Pochettino’s men are rightly priced as 21/10 outsiders for this fixture.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have now won five of their last six games – since suffering back-to-back defeats at the hands of bitter rivals Sunderland and title hopefuls Manchester City – and have lost just one of their last seven matches at home.

The Magpies have been victorious on six of the last 10 meetings with Southampton but the latter’s seven-year absence from the top flight renders the stat irrelevant to all but the crudest of form studiers.

More pertinent is the fact that the hosts are averaging 1.57 goals in front of their home fans this year, while the visitor’s have managed a meagre 0.71 per game on the road, making the 3/4 on under 2.5 goals being scored an attractive option.

With Newcastle posing the bigger goal threat it stands to reason that the home side should take the lead and Loic Remy, who has opened the scoring four times for Newcastle already this year, can be backed to strike first again at an enticing 9/2.

Better value though can be had on Jay Rodriguez rounding off proceedings with the last goal of the game, a feat he has achieved three times this season, at 8/1.

With those stats in mind, however, the more adventurous gambler could be tempted to take the 35/1 that says Remy scores first in a 2-0 win for the Magpies.
