Wilfried Zaha has made a tepid start to his Manchester United career following his £15m switch from Crystal Palace, prompting speculation that the winger will be loaned out in January.
Everton are thought to be the other club with a keen eye on the 21-year-old, but it is Newcastle who are leading the chase.
The Magpies currently occupy sixth spot in the Premier League and are not without a shout in the race for the top four given the volatile unpredictability of the top flight this term, despite odds of 50/1 suggesting otherwise.
With Hatem Ben Arfa out of sorts, Alan Pardew is hoping that Zaha’s pace and trickery can help boosts the Toon’s goal output to guide them into Champions League contention.
As for Zaha himself, he harbours aspirations of playing at the forthcoming World Cup and an impressive stint in the north east would give him an excellent chance of achieving just that.
He’s only been afforded four first team appearances by David Moyes thus far, his league contribution totalling 28 minutes despite the Red Devils’ well-documented toils.
Currently sitting behind Shinji Kagawa, Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and even Adnan Januzaj the prospects of these feeble stats significantly improving in the coming months look slim with Moyes in no position to be placing too much trust in his younger players.
Such restricted involvement, though, will almost certainly rule him out of the equation for Roy Hodgson when he comes to select his squad for Brazil. With the wide areas one of the few in which places could be up for grabs, being overlooked on account of a lack of game time must be regarded as an opportunity missed.
A temporary transfer to Tyneside, however, could see the Ivorian-born winger play his way back into World Cup consideration.
