The summer transfer window shuts in less than three weeks, so time is running out to get a deal done.
That’s certainly the case for Newcastle United, where boss Rafa Benitez is unhappy about the lack of new arrivals on Tyneside.
But according to the odds, the Magpies are in pole position for Brentford’s star man, Jota.
The talented winger’s contract at Griffin Park expires next summer, so the Bees face losing the Spaniard for nothing in 12 months time.
Valued by transfermarkt.co.uk at just over £1m, it’s believed any bid in the region of £8m would be enough to sway the Championship outfit.
Jota spent the first half of last season on loan at Eibar, but returned to West London in January and proved a revelation, hitting 12 goals from just 21 games.
It’s 6/4 Newcastle sign the 26-year-old, in a move which would help ease the tense atmosphere in the North East.
It was widely believed that Benitez had up to £75m to spend on improving his Championship winners this summer.
But with less than a month of the window remaining, the Toon Army have spent only £30m.
And they might not even succeed with Jota, with West Ham United also in the hunt at 3/1.
The Irons have made very shrewd signings this summer, notably that of Joe Hart on loan from Manchester City and fox in the box Javier Hernandez from Bayer Leverkusen for £13m.
But they’re still looking for added creativity on the flanks, and Jota could be that man.
The Hammers’ trump card is that the Spaniard wouldn’t have to up sticks and leave London either should he head to the East End.
