Kenny Dalglish has handed Alberto Aquilani a chance to resurrect his Liverpool career after the Italian midfielder returned to Liverpool following his spell at Juventus.
Juventus haven’t offered Aquilani a permanent deal after a season in which the 26-year-old started very strongly before a poor middle and a solid end to the season.
However Aquilani is now a regular starter in the Italian national team following his year at home, and if Dalglish can coax the form that led to Liverpool paying £20m for the midfielder, his return can only be a positive for the Liverpool midfield.
Dalglish has midfielders right at the top of his shopping list this summer and after the acquisition of Jordan Henderson, the Liverpool boss is eyeing moves for Aston Villa’s Stuart Downing and Blackpool’s Charlie Adam.
The return of Aquilani will provide plenty of competition in the centre of midfield and with Steven Gerrard with a whole pre-season to find full fitness, Dalglish will be working with a completely new midfield next season.
Aquilani will have a job to do to win over the fans, but he’s lucky in the fact he returns to a club who are on the up rather than on their way down.
“I return to Liverpool with great enthusiasm,” Aquilani told Sky Italia.”This is not a problem. It’s not true that I didn’t want to return to England.”
Dalglish won 11 of the 23 matches he took charge of last season but Steven Gerrard featured in just seven of those games, and with a whole summer to gel his new signings into his style of play, Liverpool can be a force next season.
The Reds are 10/1 to win the Premier League and while a title challenge looks a little optimistic, there is plenty of value in backing Liverpool to break into the top four.
Dalglish’s side are 1/1 to break in to the top four next season and with Arsenal on the decline, there is a spot in the top four there for the taking.
