Liverpool desperately need goals if they are to make a late surge for the Champions League qualification places and this could mean that they approach Sevilla in the January transfer window for Alvaro Negredo.

Just seven goals on their travels is one reason Roy Hodgson’s team find themselves in the bottom half of the table rather than contending for the title and this has also resulted in Liverpool’s betting odds being 20/1 to be relegated.

They are only four points outside of the bottom three at present, but with the standings being so tight, a steady run of victories could see them take solid strides up the table.

A new striker would help in this department, with Fernando Torres their top scorer with six league goals at the mid-way point of the season.

Negredo has been battling with the likes of Frederic Kanoute and Luis Fabiano for a spot in the Sevilla first team, but he has managed five La Liga goals this season from just 11 starts.

It is believed that Sevilla would be prepared to accept £17m for the striker and his physical presence in attack could provide Liverpool with a different asset not possessed by any of their other forwards.

Buying Negredo may also prove beneficial if Torres does end up calling time on his Anfield career at the end of the campaign or continues to be troubled with injury.

Torres has endured a frustrating season as he battles to reach full fitness and this has impacted his sharpness in attack.

However, there is no doubting his capabilities in front of goal and he could be a big price in the football betting odds at 20/1 to finish the season as the Premier League’s top scorer if he can put a run of games together.

A £10 bet on Spurs’ Rafael van der Vaart topping the Premier League scoring charts could lead to a return of £200. New Ladbrokes customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
