The crescendo of calls for David Moyes to be sacked fell dramatically last night after the Manchester United boss guided his faltering side into the last eight of the Champions League.

The Red Devils remain 18/1 outsiders to lift the trophy but the 3-0 win over Olympiakos appears to have hushed the doubters – temporarily at least – and given Moyes a stay of execution.

And the Scot can now go about attempting to build a United side of his own and is set to start with a raid on his old club.

Moyes’ first port of call will be his former employers at Goodison Park, with reports suggesting the Old Trafford board are currently in advanced talks with Everton over the transfer of Seamus Coleman.

Many have questioned Moyes’ ability to attract players but after giving the 25-year-old his first crack at the big time – in buying him for £60,000 from Sligo Rovers – the Irishman would jump at the chance of working with his former boss again.

Coleman’s displays since arriving on Merseyside have prompted Everton to consider an improved deal for the defender, but news of Moyes’ interest could halt those negotiations, with a £15m bid rumoured to be imminent.

Moyes may have bought some time with the Champions League escape, but the Red Devils remain a long way off fourth place in the Premier League and defeat at West Ham this weekend – where United are priced as 4/5 favourites – will almost certainly end their 28/1 hopes of finishing in the top four.

As such, Moyes is expected to part with over £100m this summer in a bid to usher in a new era of success at Old Trafford and with the need for experienced Premier League operators who can hit the ground running plain to see; Coleman fits the bill perfectly.
