The Premier League may soon be partying like it’s 2005 as Jose Mourinho is apparently keen on joining Rafa Benitez in making a return to England.
According to the Sun, Mourinho would prefer the City job to the Paris St Germain one and claim that his agent, Jorge Mendes, recently met with City’s new director of football Txiki Begiristain in Portugal.
Mourinho still has four years left on his contract with Real and there is no danger of the Portuguese joining City until the summer at the earliest, with his side still very much in the hunt for the Champions League – a pursuit in which Roberto Mancini has fallen well short in his managerial career.
The Spanish giants are currently the 7/2 second favourites to win the Champions League for the first time since 2002.
Meanwhile, another alleged City target – Raheem Sterling – has been told to sign a new deal by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.
Sterling has been brilliant for the Reds this season and has even picked up a maiden England cap. That’s led to a host of top teams circling (including City and Chelsea) and, with the 17-year-old eligible to sign his first senior contract in December, Rodgers is getting a bit antsy.
The Northern Irishman said: “I think it is important for the club that we sign our young talents but I think it is even more important for Raheem.
“This is a club that is going to give young players an opportunity. He has played more games than he could have dreamed of this season, both in the Premier League and the Europa League.
“Liverpool Football Club has given him the chance to become a full international player. So, I would think if I am Raheem Sterling and his agents, I would look to tie it up very quickly.”
Liverpool are currently priced at 7/1 to finish in the Premier League top four after winning just three of their opening 14 matches in the league this season.
