Manchester United could opt to take the bargain buy route with a view to strengthening the weakened Old Trafford defence, reports suggest.
United conceded just one goal against league leaders Chelsea at the weekend but with the Chris Smalling/Marcos Rojo partnership the eighth combination used by manager Louis van Gaal already this season, it is clear new defenders are on the horizon.
The Red Devils have been continually linked with some of the biggest names around the world but Feyenoord youngster Terence Kongolo has emerged as a likely cheaper alternative.
Kongolo’s younger brother Rodney is currently enrolled at the Manchester City academy, but after giving the player his international break it is believed the Feyenoord player will be keen to reunite with the United manager.
According to The Star, Van Gaal, who took 20-year-old Kongolo to the World Cup in Brazil, is keen to bid around £3m for the Dutchman in January.
The report suggests that Kongolo will be allowed to remain in Holland for the remainder of the season before joining up with United in the summer.
The Red Devils are now 4/6 to secure a top four finish after snatching a share of the points against Chelsea but with the likes of Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans either struggling with injury or form Van Gaal is expected to increase competition for places as soon as possible.
Next up for United is a trip to the Etihad, where Van Gaal’s men can be backed at 3/1 to take advantage of a potential dip in Manchester City’s confidence in the wake of their 2-1 defeat at West Ham.
The Sky Blues still go into the tie as favourites, with odds of 5/6 suggesting Manuel Pellegrini’s men bounce back at the first time of asking, while the draw is available at 14/5.
