Roberto Mancini’s expensively assembled squad showed signs that a strong tilt at the Premier League is on the cards this season after they overpowered an uninspiring Liverpool 3-0.
Carlos Tevez led the way for Mancini’s men with a double, as City produced a sparkling display in front of owner Sheikh Mansour, who was watching his first game at Eastlands since pouring his millions into the club.
Gareth Barry set the ball rolling when turning in debutant and former Aston Villa teammate James Milner’s cross, as Mancini opted to include six Englishman in his starting line-up.
City remain 6/1 to win the Premier League, but they possessed a lot more zest and unity in their performance than was the case when clinging on to a goalless draw at Tottenham on the opening day of the season.
After Barry’s opener, Tevez got on the end of Micah Richards’ header early in the second half and then completed the scoring from the penalty spot after Adam Johnson, who was a particular torment to the Liverpool defence, was hauled down by Martin Skrtel.
Mancini will now be hoping that his team can reproduce a similar performance in both their next Premier League outing and the second leg of their Europa League clash with FC Timisoara.
They are 10/11 to pick up the three points at Sunderland on Sunday, after they host their Romanian opponents in the Europa League on Thursday.
City hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg and are 1/6 to collect another win to reach the group stages of the competition.
Jo has been making some brief appearances from the bench so far for City and with Mancini potentially taking the chance to shuffle his embarrassment of riches, he could prove a good bet to net the first goal at 4/1.
Tevez is 7/1 to finish the Premier League season as top-scorer behind favourite Didier Drogba. See the whole Premier League top-scorer market.
