Manchester United are being continually linked with the game’s biggest names across Europe but beleaguered Red Devils boss David Moyes is expected to shop a little closer to home this summer.

Reports suggest Moyes will test the waters with a £30m double swoop on Southampton for teen left back sensation Luke Shaw and creative midfield talent Adam Lallana.

A miserable first season in charge at United has seen Moyes’ men slip to odds of 1000/1 to retain their title and the Old Trafford giants are odds against at 13/2 to secure Champions League football.

However, while missing out on Europe’s top competition will be a big blow to United, it is unlikely to impact the club’s ability to attract players from lower down in the Premier League.

Neither Shaw or Lallana have had a taste of Champion’s League football and while both have been the subject of admiring glances from some of the league top clubs, United’s predicament means they would both be offered first team action from the off.

Current United left back Patrice Evra appears destined to depart in the summer for a swansong in his native France, while understudy Alex Buttner has rarely impressed in his Old Trafford career to date.

This would allow Shaw to instantly cement a berth in the starting XI and Lallana would too find chances in midfield easy to come by with Nani, Ashely Young, Shinji Kagawa and the on loan Anderson all likely to be sold off in the summer.

Southampton are expected to hold out for a lot more than United’s £30m opening offer, especially with Shaw likely to be at the centre of a bidding war, but an early approach from the Red Devils could get the wheels in motion for a double swoop nearer the £40m mark.

United will face competition from the likes of Chelsea to secure Shaw’s services but the club’s reputation for building its teams around the best British players on offer could stand them in good stead if Saints decide to sell.
