An old saying states that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and, if you’ll excuse the Americanism, this could certainly prove the case with regard to Manchester United’s latest supposed transfer target.
The Red Devils are the latest club to be linked with Arsenal misfit Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The midfielder arrived at the Emirates as a £12m teenager in 2012 and despite glimpses of the talent Gunners fans expected he has largely failed to deliver on the early promise he showed at Southampton.
However, with much of his unfulfilled potential being down to injuries and a lack of first team opportunities there is every chance that the now 22-year-old could still become a world class player and that appears to be the line of thinking at Old Trafford.
According to Bleacher Report Manchester United have asked the player’s advisers to keep them in the loop with regard to Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future.
The England man is largely expected to depart north London at the end of the season and while previously a transfer between the two clubs would have been deemed highly unlikely the arrival of Robin van Persie at Old Trafford and the move of Danny Welbeck in the opposite direction shows that the two clubs are willing to do business.
With Memphis Depay likely to be shown the Old Trafford exit this summer the Ox could be the perfect replacement and with a Transfermrkt.com valuation of just £15m and only two years remaining on his Arsenal contract the move is unlikely to break the bank.
United are currently trying to peg Arsenal back in the race for Champions League football and should they do so a switch would look even more likely.
The Red Devils are next in action at home to champions-elect Leicester and go into the game as even-money favourites to take all three points and delay the Foxes’ crowning.
The draw is on at 12/5 and Leicester can be backed at 14/5 to spring yet another surprise and finally be crowned title winners.
