Confidence is slowing starting to drain on Manchester United winning the Premier League this season and they are now their biggest price of the campaign to finish atop the standings in May.

Manchester United started the season as the 13/8 favourites to win the Premier League and had been backed into as short as 1/1 after drawing with Liverpool in October.

However, back-to-back defeats and issues with positions all over the pitch have seen punters turn to Manchester City and Tottenham to instead win the league.

Manchester United’s odds are now 5/2 to claim a 13th Premier League title this season and this may be tempting given their tendency to come on strong over the second half of the campaign.

In each of the last six seasons, Manchester United have taken more points between January and May than any other Premier League club and they will need to do so again in order to bridge the current three-point gap on Manchester City.

Meanwhile, they have a far greater number of players in their ranks with a vast amount of experience of the demands and strains of a title battle.

Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick are among the Old Trafford stars with close to a hatful of winners’ medals to their name.

The majority of the Manchester City squad are facing up to this sort of challenge for the first time and the pressure is certain to affect them at some point in the run-in.

Sir Alex Ferguson has previously stated that he was expecting a quiet transfer window, but with an obvious weakness in the middle of midfield and some injury troubles in defence, he may be forced into strengthening.

Some new signings could be good news for the squad to increase competition for places and help get their title challenge back on track.

Manchester United’s recent bad patch has seen Manchester City shorten to 4/9 in the Premier League odds, with Tottenham now just 9/1.
