Manchester City could be plotting to pip cross-town rivals to two major transfer targets in Jordi Alba and Marco Reus, if reports are to be believed.
The Citizens are rumoured to be preparing a bid for the Borussia Dortmund attacker, who has long been linked with a move to the club’s Old Trafford rivals, and who could be available for as little as £20m in the summer thanks to a clause in his contract with the Bundesliga club.
City could also go directly head-to-head with the Red Devils in their pursuit of Barca star Jordi Alba, amid rumours that the Spaniard is edging towards the exit door at the Camp Nou.
The 25-year-old can operate as either a left-back or left winger and would come to the Premier League with an excellent reputation, having helped Spain win Euro 2012 and Barcelona the Spanish league title in the following season.
Much could depend on whether United can make an immediate return to the Champions League, having failed to qualify for the competition last term having finished seventh in the Premier League.
Now rejuvenated under Louis van Gaal, the Reds now sit fourth in the standings, following back-to-back top-flight wins.
Both City and United are capable of offering the players bumper deals so any move could ultimately come down to whether the Old Trafford giants can secure a return to the top table of European club football.
Fail to do so and the initiative in any deals for the pair could rest with their noisy neighbours City who would most likely have the financial clout and offer of Champions League football to attract the biggest players in the game.
