Man Utd stretching realms of possibility over Bayern striker

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will rightly have his chest puffed out after a spree of big names have opted to join him at Old Trafford recently, but even the Dutchman may be aiming too high with his latest target.

The captures of Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin within the space of a week, to follow in Memphis Depay’s footsteps, have got United’s Premier League rivals taking note.

However, reports in the Telegraph placing Schweinsteiger’s former Bayern teammate Robert Lewandowski at the top of LVG’s remaining summer wishlist could be seen as overconfidence.

The 11/2-title shots desperately need another world-class striker to back up Wayne Rooney after the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, but they are sure to be met with steely resistance by the German champions over Lewandowski.

The Poland star top scored for Bayern with 25 goals in all competitions last season and his importance to the Bavarian cause going forward won’t have gone unnoticed by Pep Guardiola.

Nevertheless, developments regarding United’s record signing mean the Red Devils may have a far greater chance of landing another first-rate target man, linked heavily over the last two years, instead.

It’s being widely reported that Angel Di Maria’s preferred method of career rehabilitation will be sought in a move to Paris Saint-Germain, rather than staying in England where his confidence has been shredded.

If this rumour transpires to hold truth, then the Parc des Princes outfit may well be more open to negotiations over Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan hotshot cost PSG £50m two summers ago, but has struggled to produce the number of goals he banged in for previous club Napoli.

Barring Cavani, names such as Christian Benteke, Alexandre Lacazette and Gonzalo Higuain all appear to be more attainable than Lewandowski.
