It takes more than just ability to make it as an elite striker in Europe and supreme confidence is an equal necessity to talent in order to survive at the top of the game.

No one can argue that Loic Remy is missing the latter after his latest comments in an interview with France Football.

Having scored 13 times for Newcastle on loan from QPR this season, Remy’s future was already under the microscope before the London Championship club’s recent announcement of substantial losses.

Talking of where his future lies Remy said: “One day I will be part of a European top-five club or a very big club. I know what I can do. I can still be much better, I have a huge margin to go on improving.”

The remarkable words in that quote is “top-five”, which indicates that the Frenchman doesn’t mind not playing in the Champions League. That could well suit Manchester United in the race for his signature.

It’s clear that there’ll be a shakeup in the United forward ranks with Robin van Persie cutting an increasingly frustrated figure and Javier Hernandez a seemingly invisible entity around Old Trafford.

While Arsenal have often been linked to capturing the former Marseille front man, it could be that Manchester United decide to swoop for Remy after a strong campaign at St James’ Park.

A player who’s taken no time at all in settling into the Premier League, Remy scored six times in 14 appearances for QPR before slotting 13 home in 23 games for Newcastle this term.

With Man Utd set to miss out on the Champions League this season – they are 10/1 to qualify via the league’s top four – they must rely on winning this season’s version to book next term’s spot.

Considering they are 15/8 to qualify over Olympiacos in this round, doing that will be tough too.

That’ll likely leave them unable to attract targets like Edinson Cavani and result in them looking at more viable options like Remy.
