It’s amazing what an unfamiliar football sighting will do for rumour patter. Whether it’s spotting a player at an airport, or frequenting a coffee shop in a town that isn’t the one he plays for, the gossip gurus love linking players to moves on the back of the most spurious of sightings.

There can be no surprise, then, that a visit as simple as Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal going to watch Holland play during the international break has sparked the Memphis-Depay-to-Old-Trafford rumour chain back into life.

That the Iron Tulip was simply watching his national team play football on a day off from Red Devils duty has crossed absolutely nobody’s mind.

Instead, the only possible reason for Van Gaal’s appearance in Amsterdam was to watch the young winger who is seemingly set to be forever linked with a Manchester United switch.

It helped that Depay, a PSV Eindhoven player, was the standout star in the Dutch side’s 2-0 win over Spain.

As a nippy left-winger, who earned his international stripes under Van Gaal in the run up to last summer’s World Cup, the 21-year-old has been likened to legendary compatriot Arjen Robben.

Although United’s failure to lure Robben away from PSV when he was a youngster is now as famous as the player himself, it seems unlikely that the 2/11 top-four shots will miss out on their man this time.

The two clubs have a solid business partnership, having dealt with each other in the transfers of both Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy in the late 90s, early 2000s.

How much Depay will cost is anyone’s guess, as he is a key figure in the Boeren’s plans, scoring 17 times in 24 Eredivisie games this season.

With Adnan Januzaj rarely seen, Angel Di Maria failing to convince and Ashley Young proving a capable back-up, Van Gaal may see no figure as too great to land his former charge.
