Liverpool’s hunt for a shiny new forward turned in yet another direction as their latest target spoke of his uncertainty over his footballing future.

Brendan Rodgers has left no stone unturned in his quest to bring a fresh pair of legs to the Anfield front line, with his attention alerted by recent comments from Torino’s Alessio Cerci.

The Italian, who is also in the transfer cross-hairs of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham, has scored nine goals for his club in Serie A this season and recently admitted that he doesn’t know whether he wants to stay at his current employers.

What is clear though is the versatile forward, who can play on the right wing or through the middle as a striker, won’t be going anywhere in January.

He told Sky Italia: “In January I will 100% stay, I’m concentrating on this jersey and supporters. In June it will be different. Should there be an offer we (myself and my agent) will evaluate it. I don’t promise never-ending love to a club. In the future, I could leave.”

Despite committing his future to the club for the short-term, Cerci’s contract is ticking down to expiry and a bid of around £12.5m for the former Roma man could be enough to convince the current sixth-placed Serie A side to part ways with their star, especially considering those less-than-committed comments.

Naturally, his words have alerted Liverpool, who are looking for reinforcements to solidify their 9/1-rated tilt at the league title, but whether they are willing to wait until the summer to nab their man remains to be seen.

With Raheem Sterling enjoying a spell of form and Jordan Henderson adapting well to playing on the wing, Rodgers may decide to stick with what he has to qualify for the Champions League, which is an 8/13 possibility, and call on Cerci for backup in that competition.
