Odds on Arturo Vidal becoming a Manchester United player this summer have been cut as short as 1/3 amid reports that the Red Devils have agreed a fee with Juventus.

The biggest transfer saga of the summer so far took an unexpected twist on Tuesday, with reports stating that United are now in talks with the Chilean midfielder’s agent in order to thrash out personal terms.

It comes just hours after Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri claimed that Vidal was happy in Turin and would not be leaving the club this summer.

However, it appears those comments were merely a bargaining tactic designed to push up the price.

The scheme looks to have worked, though, with United expected to part with almost £50m to land their number one target.

Vidal’s representatives are all too aware of United’s desire to land their client and are reported to be requesting a weekly salary in the region of £270,000.

The news has also seen United’s title odds cut, with Louis van Gaal’s men now priced at just 5/1 to wrestle the Premier League crown back from noisy neighbours Manchester City.

The Red Devils continued their impressive pre-season form with a 5-3 penalty win over Inter Milan following their victories over Roma and LA Galaxy.

However, the 0-0 scoreline at the end of 90 minutes indicates why Van Gaal is keen to beef up his midfield.

Ander Herrera and Juan Mata have impressed but Tom Cleverley has done little to enhance his reputation in pre-season so far and it is the England man who looks most likely to be moved on to accommodate the arrival of Vidal.

The 27-year-old’s arrival would take United’s summer spending to beyond £100m but Van Gaal is not expected to stop there, with the likes of Mats Hummels and Thomas Vermaelen still being heavily linked with moves to Old Trafford.
