Although he’s had two of the world’s best at his disposal already in his short time at Manchester United, Louis van Gaal clearly still craves a dominant wide man in his Red Devils squad.
The Dutchman, who has worked with Angel di Maria and Memphis Depay during his two-season stint at Old Trafford, recently suggested he is looking for “speed” on the wing, prompting a round of transfer rumours from the farcical to the fabulous.
Bournemouth’s Matt Ritchie is a player that falls into the former category, while Gareth Bale and Neymar are two names being linked to the club at the opposite end of the scale.
In between, there’s a host of players that media outlets are suggesting the Man United boss could plump for, like Southampton’s Sadio Mane, who was the subject of a bid from Van Gaal this past summer.
A new name has cropped up in the debate now too, with the Daily Mirror throwing supposed Bayern Munich sulker Arjen Robben into the mix.
The 31-year-old is reportedly unhappy at the Bavarian powerhouse, because Robert Lewandowski has called him too selfish. The Polish striker has taken over from Robben as Pep Guardiola’s star man and the theory goes that the winger isn’t too pleased about it.
As you’d expect, such disgruntlement has put Man United on “red alert” to reunite the former Chelsea man with his former national team boss.
Although now the wrong side of 30, Robben still possesses a healthy dose of pace and would certainly fit Van Gaal’s bill, albeit as a short-term measure.
With Depay falling out of favour just like Di Maria before him, there’s no reason Van Gaal won’t make an attempt to swoop on Robben this January as he attempts to claim the Premier League title for the first time.
United sit two points short of Manchester City in that pursuit and are rated at 6/1 to overhaul the deficit by Ladbrokes.
