Manchester United have contacted Liverpool about the potential availability of Raheem Sterling, after it emerged the young winger has demanded his Anfield exit arrives swiftly.
Despite the obvious frostiness between the two clubs and the serious taboo subject of switches between them, United are undeterred.
Aware that Sterling’s publicised desire to leave Liverpool flings the Reds into a quandary this summer, the Old Trafford outfit are rightly adding their hat to a ring rapidly filling with headwear.
Initial reports suggest Liverpool have been quick to slam the door on any such negotiations with their bitter rivals over Stering’s future.
In fact, the Reds official stance remains resolute that their rebellious forward is simply not for sale at any price with two years left on his current Anfield deal.
Such standoffs rarely end favourably for either party though and nine times out of 10 it is in the interest of the club to accept a financial windfall, rather than keep a poisonous presence in the fold.
With all the media coverage this contract debacle has created, the situation is now so toxic for Liverpool that selling Sterling for a bumper sum is now looking increasingly like the best available hand to play.
If it’s not United who are set to profit, then it’s almost certain to be another of the Premier League’s elite clubs with Manchester City the early frontrunners for the England man’s services.
It’s taken as read that the Citizens are in line for a revamp of their ageing squad, and at 20 years of age, and home-grown with it, Sterling’s profile is perfect for the outgoing champions.
Given the history, if United really could land him then this would be one of the transfer stories of the Premier League era, let alone this summer.
