Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Romelu Lukaku, but the Belgian’s imminent arrival means they need to change their plans elsewhere.

Late last night the Guardian claimed that that now the Red Devils have snatched the Everton frontman from under Chelsea’s noses, the Blues will not sell Nemanja Matic to Old Trafford.

And that means Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier is back on United’s radar.

Tottenham have never made any comments to suggest the England international is available, but it’s believed the Red Devils have already tried and failed with one bid for the 23-year-old..

But Dier spent much of last season at centre-back, with Victor Wanyama ousting him from the defensive midfield position at White Hart Lane.

Valued at £21m by transfermarkt.co.uk, Dier is under contract to the North London side until 2021, and any agreement could reach well over £45m.

And United could certainly tempt the midfielder with a hefty enhancement on his £70,000-per-week wages.

Tottenham also have one eye on the books while they complete their move to the revamped White Hart Lane, which may yet have a factor on their summer with Kyle Walker and Danny Rose also linked with moves away.
