Since arriving at Chelsea with lorry loads of cash following him up the King’s Road, Roman Abramovich has rarely had to make ends meet before launching into a spending spree.
But, with buying a new striker sitting heavily bolded and double underlined at the top of the Russian’s summer to-do list, that seems exactly like what’s about to happen as unfavoured David Luiz is sold to fund a deal for Diego Costa.
The Brazilian, who has started just two of the Blues’ last eight matches, is actually the perfect man to free up some cash ahead of a move for his Atletico Madrid compatriot.
With Barcelona needing to replace their own frizzy haired centre back this summer after Carlos Puyol’s recent decision to leave, Luiz will attract some weighty offers from the Spanish giants and clubs of that ilk following news of his availability.
There’s no question that Chelsea, who are 13/2 to win the Premier League, should cash-in on the defender either, as he’s the weakest performing Blue in a number of key defensive stats according to WhoScored.com.
Gary Cahill, John Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta all make more clearances than the former Benfica man’s 4.0 per game in the Premier League, while no Chelsea defender commits more fouls per match than the ball-loving number four.
His positional sense isn’t as strong as Cahill’s or Terry’s and his love of having the ball at his feet has seen him trialled as a defensive midfielder too.
It’s that marauding nature that makes him more suited to playing in a league on the continent, where there is more of an emphasis on ball-playing centre halves.
With Kurt Zouma arriving at Stamford Bridge in January, Chelsea aren’t short of an alternative to replace Luiz either and if they can find a deal that will help fund Costa’s arrival, Jose Mourinho would surely only be too happy to make it.
