Liverpool spending spree looks like beginning with Serie A star

Despite continued uncertainty over the managerial position at Liverpool the club’s transfer committee looks to be busy nonetheless, with latest developments edging Inter midfielder Mateo Kovacic nearer to Anfield.

Italian news outlet suggest Kovacic met with Liverpool executives in Milan this week, while the Metro indicate a £12.9m bid has been lodged.

Meanwhile, the move is given more legs by the fact Inter are trying to free up funds to land their principle midfield target, Yaya Toure.

Kovacic has long been perceived as a precocious talent in his home country and in his third season with Inter he’s finished with eight goals and three assists.

The 21-year-old Croatia international is viewed as a potential long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard at Anfield.

Kovacic is able to play anywhere in midfield but he’s most usefully deployed as a central-midfield playmaker, where his marauding runs are a trademark.

After a dismal season, Reds fans will be hoping that this business can be wrapped up sooner rather than later to set the ball rolling on a summer of investment.

Having regressed hugely from the title-contending outfit they became last season, fans will be expectant that this will be the first of several transfers to improve Liverpool’s ailing squad.

Whether it’s Brendan Rodgers who is trusted with many more of the purchases remains to be seen, with an impending review by the club’s owners and Jurgen Klopp lurking in the wings.
