Following his standout contribution to PSV Eindhoven’s Eredivisie winning campaign, Memphis Depay is the toast of transfer rumour land and the latest development appears significant.

Manchester United have consistently been linked with a swoop for the 21-year-old Dutch forward, who shot to prominence at the 2014 World Cup and has since bagged 20 league goals for PSV.

Until this point Depay’s obvious connection to Louis van Gaal, who managed Holland at the finals, has placed United at the front of the queue to sign him.

However, The Mirror now report that the player himself has held covert discussions with United’s huge Premier League rivals Liverpool just this week.

The newspaper suggest £20m-rated Depay and his representatives met a delegation from the Anfield outfit, which included Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre.

Although the Red Devils are certain not to give up on capturing one of their chief transfer targets, the fact Liverpool are the only club to have gained official permission to open discussions at this point, has to be a coup for Brendan Rodgers and co.

The timing of these revelations couldn’t be more apt either. They come in the same week as Liverpool’s manager admitted he needs a new frontline striker.

Citing Daniel Sturridge’s problems with fitness as a cause for concern going forward, Rodgers was adamant the England man must be supplemented by a regular goalscorer next season.

Rodgers said “I need one (a striker) that is going to be playing and at a top level every week.”

Liverpool face West Brom in their next Premier League game desperate for 19/20-rated victory, to keep some semblance of pressure on Manchester City one place above them in fourth, who feature in the evening kick-off against Aston Villa a few hours later.
