Liverpool’s vice-captain is the subject of renewed interest from his former manager Rafa Benitez and with Napoli dangling the carrot of defensive midfielder Gokhan Inler as part of the deal, the time for the Reds to cash-in has finally come.
There is no doubting that Liverpool’s multi-tattooed Dane is a defender of great class, as concerted interest in signing him over the last few years from Barcelona and Juventus testifies.
However, Agger’s Anfield career has been continually plagued by injures, extensive ones at that, and at 29 he’s no spring chicken.
The existing campaign is no different as the centre-back has made just 11 Premier League appearances for the Reds this season, where he’s also lost favour with manager Brendan Rodgers and is currently sidelined with a calf injury – his second major lay-off of the season.
This latest injury leaves Rogers with a significant defensive reshuffle on the cards ahead of their vital Merseyside derby clash against Everton, as Glen Johnson recently joined long-term casualty Jose Enrique on the physio table for an indefinite period.
While the Toffees arrive at Liverpool with a string of absentees themselves, there may never have been better value than the 16/5 on Everton to break their 13-game Premier League hoodoo at Anfield with a win.
The other major plus point in cashing in on Agger during the last few days of the January transfer window, is the very real possibility or landing Napoli’s defensive midfielder Inler.
Inler is well regarded in Italy as a tenacious ball-winning defensive midfielder, who has been a regular under Benitez, though the club’s hierarchy are willing to sacrifice him to snare Agger.
Given Lucas’ latest injury, this is a deal-sweetener worth taking for Liverpool.
