Liverpool hope to offer Manchester United star an Old Trafford escape

Despite finishing as the Premier League’s joint-top scorer last season, Dimitar Berbatov has been restricted to just five league starts over the course of this latest campaign.

He is reportedly ready to now end his Old Trafford tenure, with Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish believed to be keen on obtaining the Bulgarian’s services.

Liverpool scored only 47 goals in 38 league matches this season, and Dalglish wants to add a proven Premier League goalscorer to his squad in order to improve on that tally next year.

Berbatov has racked up 75 goals in the top tier of English football to prove his credentials, and even managed seven Premier League strikes this term, despite only starting five times.

Now 31, Berbatov’s presumed availability has sparked a wave of interest from a number of European clubs, as the likes of Lazio and his former club Bayer Leverkusen wish to offer the forward a deal.

A switch elsewhere in England could now prove a viable option for the Bulgarian however, and Dalglish could be backed with the funds to offer Berbatov a lucrative deal.

The fact that only one year remains on his Manchester United contract means he wouldn’t be attributed a massive price tag, and a fee between £3million and £5million should suffice.

Such a fee appears miniscule bearing in mind Berbatov remains United’s record signing, as a £30.75million acquisition four years ago, and with regards to his global reputation.

He could prove an ideal foil for the energetic Luis Suarez, whilst Dalglish is eager to add some attacking experience to aid the development of the still-raw Andy Carroll.

Of potential Anfield outgoings, attacking options Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriguez are expected to move on, so the need for a new forward is pressing on Merseyside.

Berbatov’s languid playing style differentiates him from other Liverpool players, and the striker may prove an ideal summer addition from their great rivals.
