Liverpool fans will be relieved to hear manager Brendan Rodgers has not given up hope of replacing Luis Suarez with another top-quality striker before the summer transfer window closes.

Rodgers said: “The money is there – and we will look to improve at the top end of the field until the very end of the window.

“It’s not easy to get a top level striker, no. But we have to keep looking. We certainly need something, because we haven’t brought in another striker so far, apart from Rickie Lambert.”

Lambert’s capture for a fairly modest fee has been widely accepted as decent business, but it’s not lost on Reds fans that none of the host of new arrivals come close to fitting the bill of ‘world-class striker’ thus far.

These latest comments would appear to breathe new life into the possibility of bringing in the likes of Monaco man Radamel Falcao or either of Paris St-Germain duo Edinson Cavani or Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Falcao is known to be a target of Real Madrid, but the papers over in Spain claim there is little chance of the Champions League winners going after a third ‘Galactico’ this summer.

Meanwhile, Cavani is thought to be another player Rodgers is a great admirer of and is definitely on the list, though links to an £18m deal for Lavezzi have cooled considerably.

Liverpool have strengthened in many other areas of the pitch and could field as many as three new faces in defence alone when they take on Southampton in their Premier League curtain raiser.

The Reds are 10/11 to keep a clean sheet when the Saints visit Anfield with a back-line which could feature Spanish duo Javier Manquillo and Croatian international Dejan Lovren.
