Newcastle are already heavily fancied in the market to be 2016/17 Championship winners and their work in the transfer market has done plenty for their chances.
Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Atletico Madrid’s Jesus Gamez are the headliners among five new faces at St James’ Park.
Where those odds will crash to should the club’s most recent target be secured is anyone’s guess though, as reports emerge that Newcastle want Lucas Leiva included in a deal that would send Georginio Wijnaldum to Liverpool.
The Brazilian’s arrival would certainly help soothe the pain of losing Wijnaldum, with Lucas carrying a wealth of experience with him from nine seasons of service at Anfield.
Magpies boss Rafa Benitez signed the 29-year-old while he was in the Liverpool dugout, so is well aware of the qualities the midfielder would bring to his new club.
It is suggested by the Telegraph that Lucas could even be offered the captain’s armband as an incentive to make the switch, after club captain Fabricio Coloccini left to return to his homeland with San Lorenzo.
The purchase would have to be regarded as a considerable coup for Benitez should he pull it off, with Lucas far from a wasted talent in the Premier League.
Although he appears at odds with Jurgen Klopp’s frenetic style of play, the defence screener would certainly be among the best players in the second tier should he plump for a Benitez reunion.
His arrival would also enhance Newcastle’s already weighty reputation as the team to beat in the Championship this season.
