Borussia Dortmund already look destined for a challenging summer with at least two of their pivotal playing staff set to leave the club, but it would be the icing on the cake if the manager also decides his future lies elsewhere.

Mario Gotze has already agreed a deal with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and the rumours suggest that leading Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is to follow in his footsteps.

Further reports have hinted that defender Mats Hummels is top of Barcelona’s wishlist, while interest is strong in the likes of Marco Reus and Sven Bender, meaning that Dortmund will have to rebuild despite potentially winning the Champions League.

A strong youth set up could fill some of the void, with Moritz Leitner a particularly exciting attacking talent, but it would surely be a sense of frustration to manager Jurgen Klopp if the team that he built pretty much disbanded.

Therefore, there is the possibility that he may also decide to take up a new challenge elsewhere rather than build Dortmund again and the Manchester United position must surely represent a temptation.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to step down at the end of the season has seen many names added to the hat to be his replacement and Klopp is considered one of the more likely appointments at Old Trafford at 12/1.

Sources have hinted that a focus on youth development will be required of Fergie’s successor and Klopp has certainly put his faith in youngsters at Dortmund.

In fact in the second leg of the Champions League semi final with Real Madrid, only two of his 10 outfield starters were born before 1988.

The big question mark over Klopp going to Man Utd is that Sir Alex is almost certain to have sorted out his successor before announcing his decision to step down and whether he has been on the Old Trafford radar for long enough to have influenced plans remains to be seen.
