Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are taking the Premier League by storm right now, sitting top of the table with 26 points in the bank, and an unmatched 30 goals to their name. But the Reds gaffer is still on the hunt for attacking talent, with Iranian forward Sardar Azmoun the latest target at Anfield.
The floppy-haired forward burst onto the scene with Russian outfit Rubin Kazan as a teenager in 2013, but left for FC Rostov in 2015. And it’s with Selmashi that the 21-year-old has emerged as one of European football’s top young talents.
He hit double figures for the Russian Premier League side last season, as they recorded their best ever league finish, taking second spot behind CSKA Moscow. That guaranteed Champions League football in this campaign, and it’s an opportunity Azmoun has grasped with both hands.
Having already netted against Anderlecht, Ajax and last season’s finalists Atletico Madrid, his combination of pace, passing and lethal finishing has unsurprisingly caught the eye of another European heavyweight in the form of Liverpool.
With generally modest fees banded around in Russian football, he could also be available for a bargain fee, with Transfermarkt.co.uk predicting his asking price at £5.95m.
That modest fee will only encourage Klopp, and if Liverpool are still on course for a serious title tilt once the January transfer window opens, the addition of attacking depth from a player of Azmoun’s quality could be a fantastic buy.
However, the Reds gaffer will have to put his shopping plans on hold once the International break ends, with focus turning to a tricky trip to Southampton.
Liverpool are 21/20 to record a fourth win in five visits to St Mary’s, while the most optimistic Reds can back a repeat of the 6-1 victory they managed here last season at the whopping price of 175/1.
